Has there ever been a more exciting time to love music? Despite the music industry’s loud, long-standing complaints, the answer is ‘No!’
Today we have more artists making more music that’s more accessible to more fans than ever before. But just because platforms like YouTube, Spotify and Pandora have made music listening more convenient than ever, and services like Kickstarter and Indiegogo have given bands new ways of supporting themselves, creating new work and funding concert tours, it doesn’t mean it’s all ‘out with the old’ in the world of sharps and flats.
The 2015 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony last Sunday highlights this strange new intersection of old established grandeur and new digital access. Below, we’ve collected some of the 2015 inductees, compiled some of their greatest performances from around the web. Check out the best way to capture them for keeps in our Supported Site Directory.
Happy listening!
- Ringo Starr
There are so many mythic stories and timeless Beatles performances it’s hard to pick just one. But for the true connoisseur, Ringo has his own mythology. Before the Rock Hall of Fame induction performance, it had been years since bandmates Paul and Ringo had played together. Their set at the ceremony is fun and includes cameos from other 2015 inductees. The YouTube video here is shot on some lucky audience member’s phone but the audio comes through clearly. Fire up Replay Media Catcher for the video and use Replay Music to save the track for your kids’ iPod.
- Green Day
Ranking the best Green Day performances can seem like a rorschach test: some prefer professional, clean-sounding shows like the famous Good Riddance performance in Germany in 2009, while others will always love Billy Joe for his iHeartRadio Festival freakout. Whatever kind of Green Day fan you are, you’re sure to find more than an exciting thing or two on the Green Day Hardcore Fan Playlist on Spotify. Put another quarter in your version of Replay Music to listen to it whenever and wherever you like.
- Joan Jett & the Blackhearts
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ performance to open the ceremony has gotten a lot of attention, in part for appearances by Dave Grohl and Miley Cyrus. But to get a full taste of the long, rock history of the platinum selling feminist icon, check out the Joan Jett and the Blackhearts radio station on Pandora.
- Lou Reed
Lou Reed is as colorful as the old breed of musicians come (drugs or Monopoly, anyone?). And debates about his greatest performances and even best versions of a single song go on. One of our favorites is his 1976 performance at the Roxy in LA, which is available in its’ entirety on YouTube, so go make it yours forever.
- Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble
Ask most rock critics and they’ll tell you Stevie Ray Vaughan’s short-lived mainstream career was among the most influential in the history of the electric guitar. His technical range was on par with his stylistic range. Sample tons of the legend’s live and recorded work at last.fm.
