Know Your Recording Rights (and Your Super Bowl Commercials)

Whew. What a game last Sunday! We could barely pull ourselves from our screen — especially in those last ten minutes. As we marveled in the replays and even went back to replay the streaming feed on NBC, thanks to our Replay Video Capture software, we realized that some customers and those non-Applian laymen might think that our insistence of recording this NFL game might be (*gasp) illegal. Well, ladies and gentlemen, it’s not. But the NFL does a fantastic job at making you think so. An intelligent Ars Technica article that came out last week does a great job explaining why it’s not. Here’s a sample:

The NFL is also drastically overstating its case when it comes to actual copies of the game or pictures coming from it. You can record the Super Bowl. It’s been undeniably, unquestionably legal since 1984 that you can record the broadcast to watch later (and skip commercials, if you’re so inclined). And the fair use doctrine that allows you to do this also lets you use those recordings for other purposes, too. If you want to use clips for commentary or criticism or news reporting of some aspect of the game or the broadcast, that’s perfectly legal, too.

So don’t fear, Applian friends. Go ahead and get your Super Bowl re-watch on. Oh, and if you missed all of the advertising action because of the NBC stream, we highly recommend that you check out this full recap of the multi-million-dollar spots.

Our personal favorite, and slightly underrated, was the pitch-perfect Sarah Silverman and Chelsea Handler commercial from T-Mobile. We hope it’s an ongoing theme, because we love seeing comedians do what they do best — make fun of themselves and each other:

Much has been said of the Golden Age of television today, and now, more than ever, more is being done to take the TV out of the box and onto your more savvy technological devices. We’ve been in this industry for a long time and there has never been a better time to unplug from TV subscriptions and go in for online media subscriptions and computer software (like us!). Here’s why:

THE CABLE COMPANY IS NOT YOUR FRIEND

It’s not difficult to notice your cable package getting more and more expensive every year. Analysts have discovered that the price of TV subscriptions have increased 32% over the last five years. At this rate, it’s already increasing faster than inflation. So, even if you’re in that steady job, you’ll need a raise every time you renew your platform to watch Judge Judy. Not to mention the Net Neutrality debacle to strangle the open playing field for Internet speed (we recommend watching this funny and honest segment by John Oliver for context) Basically, media companies are realizing that the new age of online content is happening like a tsunami and they want to tie you to the weight that is a cable package.

MORE CONTENT FOR LESS EFFORT (AND MONEY)

There are so many great services online to find original content, television shows, and full-length movies. And, much of it involves very little heavy lifting on your end. Not only do you get to create your own “playlists” or queues of content to watch, but also you no longer get the incessant noise of near constant commercials. Here are some of our quick tips on the different sources for your “new cable”:

HBOGo: It’s not TV, indeed. HBO announced they are working on a subscription-only plan that doesn’t even need a cable provider, but for now, you can still access archives of award-winning television and monthly new episodes and movies online.
Netflix: Everyone’s favorite new media platform, Netflix has been breaking the mold with their original content and providing endless hours of syndicated TV and hundreds of great movies streaming. Additionally, they refresh their stock monthly.
Amazon Prime: Making news with their Golden Globe-winning “Transparent”, Amazon has been making waves in original content as well with their Instant Video subscription. Not to mention, they have a different hold on networks and studios, so they offer different options than Netflix has, and can’t get.
Google Chromecast: This is a pay-as-you-go service and TV plug-in device, similar to On Demand Movies (or Xbox, Apple TV, etc), wherein you pay for films you’d like to see. Many of them are recently released to theaters or just out to the public. There is also a ton of content if you synch your HULU Plus account and “cast” from there. Pretty much any computer screen can be “casted” to your television, so it makes YouTube a whole new world of entertainment.

This is just a sampling and a generalized description of the options that are open to the cord-cutters out there. Sure, some research is involved, but getting an extra $50 to $150 back in your wallet every month is definitely worth it.

GET EVERYTHING YOU NEED

But what about live TV? With services like Pluto TV providing options for news and music channels, and more and more major networks making their primetime events streaming, for example the Super Bowl will be online for free for eleven hours (including pre and post-game coverage); it’s only fitting that the future is adapting to a whole audience of chord-cutters. In fact, geography doesn’t even matter if you integrate a VPN service to allow you to tiptoe over international restrictions to access sites like BBC.

Sure, there are now more places to find great content, but what’s the next step in storing and re-watching the media you love? Scrooged: If you’re like us, then anything with Bill Murray is a winner. This 80s classic is the reinterpretation of “A Christmas Carol”, but with more snark and less Victorian London scenery. Not only is it a touching feel-good holiday film, but it is downright funny, thanks to Mr. Murray and his signature brand of effervescent charm.

White Christmas: Looking for a fluffy holiday musical that even grandma can love (or loves to re-watch)? Search no further. The insanely likable Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye duo give this classic Christmas tale a fun feel. You’ll be singing and dancing all evening, just hoping for more snow.

Nightmare Before Christmas: This Tim Burton family film is gorgeously unique and definitely has it’s place in the Holiday-Film-Hall-of-Fame (if there were one). Additionally filled with catchy tunes about the dreaded Christmas time and the revered Halloween, it’s the perfect transition from the scary to the sweet with emo-perfect execution.

The Fitzgerald Family Christmas: Written and directed by Ed Burns, this is a recent (2012) holiday drama that profiles a broken family trying to find that Christmas spirit. A fantastic ensemble cast and authentic feel make this film about family dynamics and drama one to distract you from your own sibling chaos this year.

A Saturday Night Live Christmas: Okay, so this one is technically not a Netflix streaming option, but thankfully you have Replay Video Catcher and can also get in on all of the Hulu action too! The 40-year-old TV institution compiled it’s best holiday-related sketches into one hilarious giant “show”. Relive all the funny and relish in performances from cast members past.

Replay Radio: Get Your Podcast On!

There’s something about autumn that makes us want to cozy up to a great radio program with a cup of tea and watch the leaves change. Thankfully, you can schedule and organize all of your favorites with Replay Radio. Here’s what we’ve been excited to get our ears on this month:

Car Talk: We were so sad to hear about the passing of Tom Magliozzi, the other side of Click & Clack. But thankfully you can relive the magic in the archives. Enjoy the laughter and learn something about automobiles, but mostly the laughter.

Doug Loves Movies: Funny-man Doug Benson hosts this gleeful gathering of celebrities and comedians to play the Leonard Maltin game: wherein a piece of Mr. Maltin’s movie review is given and guests must guess the film. Always turns into a hilarious (and fun) conversation.

Netflix Conflix: Our Picks Leaving October 1st

Netflix is constantly rearranging its offerings of movies and television shows, which means that every month, there’s a whole new batch to view and fall in love with. Unfortunately, that also means that another handful of great cinema gets pushed off streaming. Here are our picks for you to hurry and record with Replay Video Capture before they disappear online (at least, for free – for now).

GHOSTBUSTERS I & II: This is the ideal 80s movie, made complete with campy humor, heart throughout, suspicious special effects, and Bill Murray. Recording these two enjoyable pieces of cinematic charm is a wise move, so you can enjoy them when you’ve got nothing to watch. Save them for a long rainy day, and rejoice in melting giant marshmallows in hot chocolate.

BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA: Francis Ford Coppola’s amazing tribute to the classic horror tale has more juicy trivia in it than most mystery thrillers. One of the most well known elements of the film are the in-camera effects that Coppola insisted on. After firing a team of effect supervisors, he hired his 29 year-old son, Roman, to take the helm. Look for them and read up, it’s pretty magical. Oh, and the movie itself is brilliant with performances by Gary Oldman as Dracula and Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: A sci-fi pillar, this television show proved that a complex space series could function without the Star Trek umbrella. Unlike the latter more episodic-based television, BSG retains a narrative that stretches over four seasons to unveil a rich cast of characters and compelling plot. After a terrifyingly advanced enemy (the Cylons) destroys the 12 colonies, a fleet of military and civilian ships are the only thing remaining of humanity, where they are left traveling through space to find the mythical Earth. Even if sci-fi isn’t your thing, BSG makes everyone a believer. By recording and having the series on-hand, you can get anyone at anytime on the Battlestar bandwagon.

MEAN GIRLS: This 2004 movie is one that is a staple for a particular generation – for what it’s worth – and is the stuff of sound bytes and repeatable quotes. You’ll be wearing pink on Wednesdays after Mean Girls marathons. It is the best teen film since Clueless and with a screenwriter like Tina Fey behind it; you know it’s full of perfect one-liners and comedic timing. Enjoy the more sober, less troubled Lindsay Lohan and save this movie for the next round of teenagers who need a lesson on how to survive high school and beyond.

FUNNY OR DIE:

The celebrity-endorsed platform for hilarious series and one-offs, where you can catch the very watch worthy “Drunk History” and “Between Two Ferns With Zack Galifinakis” along with a ton of other giggle-making sketches.

CRACKED:

More centered on Internet memes and pop culture, Cracked offers some humorous takes on everything from Doctor Who to Kanye West. Also, check out the “Artist In Residency Program” where they feature a filmmaker hand-picked for your viewing pleasure.

CHEEZBURGER:

The OG funny video site still has quite a bit of life – and not as many cat memes. With a new Video section in Beta, they are experimenting with a whole channel devoted to Cheez-approved YouTube content. Don’t worry; there are still cat videos.

THE CHIVE:

This site is full of hilarious distractions. Everything from GIFs, to listicles, to random factoids, you can loose yourself for hours on The Chive. If you’re looking to capture some funny, watch and record their trending videos for a clue as to what will be popping up in your Facebook feed next.

COLLEGE HUMOR:

Another classic funny video site, College Humor has been serving up the chuckles for 15 years, and boasts an impressive collection of original series and sketches. Our personal favorite is “Phantom of the Office” – we’d hire him just to keep us laughing.

Archeology Channel This has to be Indiana Jones’ most-visited webpage – well, maybe next to Google Maps. Here, you can explore human culture from Ancient Greek myths to isolated tribes in Southeast Asia.

Documentary Storm:

Documentary Storm Get some of the freshest and compelling documentaries here. For those with an elevated taste in cinema, these informative pieces run the gamut and beat out anything you might find on Netflix Streaming.

Documentary Net:

Similarly enlightening, this network of docs does a great job of sorting by length, geographical location, and rating. Use your recording software to keep your own archive of priceless nonfictional cinema.

John Locker:

Providing a bit more obscure documentaries and educational pieces, this site has a huge variety of professionally produced and independent shorts (and films) that you can dig deep into.

TED Talks:

The online source for the global lecture series, the site has all of the talks in-full in all of their motivational glory. Certainly living up to its motto: ideas worth spreading.

PBS:

The granddaddy of televised education; Public Broadcasting Service has provided generations of media content. From your first Sesame Street song to the compelling Antiques Roadshow, PBS still has awesome editorial features and political commentary.
