The Best Christmas Movies to Remind You of Being a Kid During the Holidays

Nowadays, the holidays can feel like a time of stress rather than a time of festivities − whether from the gift-buying rush, surviving family get-togethers, or paying off those rising bills. But once upon a time, back in those childhood days, it really was the most magical time of the year. Unfortunately, you can’t travel back in time…. But you can hit record and rewind. Here’s our favorite list of movies to watch and record throughout the holiday season.

A Charlie Brown Christmas and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

A ruckus was created earlier in the year when it was announced that none of the Charlie Brown holiday specials would be airing on network television, after ABC pulled the plug on a 55-year streak. But where there’s a network void, there’s a streaming network ready to bridge the gap. Apple+ pledged to to fulfill Snoopy deprivation by making each holiday special available for free, even to non-subscribers, on limited days. So all the Peanuts holiday specials are at the top of our watch and record holiday movie list.

Available on: Apple+

Gremlins

Gremlins is a favorite for anyone who grew up in the 80s, cult movie loyalists and

hipsters. But with the holiday genre so full of options, it can sometimes be lost in the crowd. When it does air, make sure you hit record, to rewatch the original horror x Christmas movie.

Available on: YouTube

The Muppet Christmas Carol

Gen Z-ers only seem to vaguely know who the Muppets are but for Millennials and Generation X, they were everything. Literally, they did everything from take Manhattan, live in Space, and in The Muppet Christmas Carol, recreate Dickens’ classic. It holds up, seriously. Press record and watch it again to see.

Available on: YouTube

A Christmas Story

A Christmas Story should not make this list as TBS’ 24 hour tradition of airing the movie continuously makes it sort of unnecessary, yet, it still does because even with a 24 hour airing, we know opening presents, sledding, cooking holiday dinner, etc. might have you missing major scenes. And no one wants to miss their favorite from this classic, whether it’s electric sex from the leg lamp in the window, or when Ralphie finally does shoot his eye out!

Available on: YouTube

Love, Actually

Ok, while Love, Actually isn’t as childlike as our other selections, it was released a full 17 years ago! For everyone who was still a teen or tween when this movie came out, it gave you high hopes for what Christmas could be like when falling in love as a grown up. Love, Actually was so universally well received, it’s now a modern classic and maybe remains the heavyweight champion in holiday rom-coms.

Available on: AmazonPrime

5 Thanksgiving Movies to Watch

Thanksgiving is just around the corner — a time for catching up with family and friends, putting on your favorite pair of stretchy pants, and firing up a good movie to enjoy after dinner. For this special holiday, we’ve rounded up 5 family-approved movies that each one of your relatives will enjoy. And, with the help of Replay Capture Suite, you’ll have these fan-favorite flicks saved so that you can watch them on repeat with loved ones — there’s never enough family movie time! Without further delay, here are 5 Thanksgiving movies to watch this year…

You’ve Got Mail

In this classic, late 90s Tom Hanks / Meg Ryan romcom, You’ve Got Mail gives us the story of two people in an online romance — AOL, anyone? — who are unaware they are also business rivals. Watch as they cross paths in reality, and share a completely different relationship over email. This movie was the third pairing of Hanks and Ryan, following Joe Versus the Volcano (1990) and Sleepless in Seattle (1993). While You’ve Got Mail isn’t an Oscar-worthy flick, it’s definitely a feel-good movie we can all appreciate!

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

John Candy and Steve Martin together on-screen? Thanksgiving movies just don’t get any better than this. In Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Candy and Martin make an unlikely pair of travel companions trying to get home for Thanksgiving. Follow along on their hilarious adventure.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving originally aired in November 1973, and actually won an Emmy award the following year! Until 2019, the special continued to be aired on prime time television on the ABC network. Now, you can catch it on Apple TV for a short period of time, or whenever suits you best on Amazon Prime. When Peppermint Patty invites herself and her friends over to Charlie Brown’s for Thanksgiving, along with Linus, Snoopy, and Woodstock in the mix, Charlie Brown attempts to host a successful Thanksgiving dinner. Will it go off without a hitch? This family-favorite will be sure to put a smile on your face.

The New World

The New World stars Colin Farrell as Captain John Smith, Q’orianka Kilcher as Pochantos and Christian Bale as John Rolfe, a British settler, bringing the previously only animated story of Pochantos to life. Captain John Smith arrives with a British expedition in Virginia in 1607, but is captured by Native Americans. His life is spared thanks to Pocahontas, the daughter of the tribe’s chief. Smith and Pocahontas fall in love, to the strong disapproval of both the Native Americans and British. As a result, Smith is sent away and reported dead. A heartbroken Pocahontas marries Rolfe, but when Smith turns up alive, she is torn between the two men.

Meet the Parents

Many of us can relate to Meet the Parents — after all, holidays are often a perfect opportunity to meet the family of a significant other. At least most of us can say that we haven’t endured the shenanigans and mishaps that Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) has to when meeting his girlfriend’s parents — starring Robert DeNiro and Blythe Danner. Focker’s first visit to Pam’s parents’ house turns out to be a complete nightmare — more than he could have ever imagined. Hoping to use the weekend as a chance to propose to his girlfriend in front of family, he only succeeds in getting on his prospective father-in-law’s bad side and almost destroys their home in the process — yikes!

Tips: How To Build A Successful YouTube Channel

With a reported 2 billion users worldwide, there’s no surprise that YouTube is one of the hottest spots to build a brand, share content, and make some serious cash. But with so many content creators out there, how can you make your YouTube channel stand out from the crowd? While there’s no magic formula to success, there are plenty of simple tips and tricks you can employ to set yourself up for a thriving YouTube channel. Read on to find out more…

  1. If you’re starting out from scratch, think about what you want to do with your channel. Firstly, who are you going to target? How are you going to appeal to them? The more targeted your content is, the more it will speak to these viewers. Then, consider what type of content you are going to be posting… Will your videos include tutorials, product reviews, or vlogs of your day-to-day life? How can you engage your viewers − are you going to be educating them, or entertaining them? Answering all of these questions will be your first step to building a successful channel.
  1. Establish your personal brand. All great brands have an identity, so your YouTube channel will need one too. When considering your visuals and audio, what style do you want your channel to adopt? What topics do you want to focus on? No matter what you do, don’t forget to convey your personality. There is only one of you in the world, so make your channel stand out by being yourself, whether that’s opening up in a personal vlog, or sharing a bit of who you are in a tutorial or product demo.
  1. Work hard to develop quality content. Think about investing in some dedicated equipment such as lights, a quality camera or microphone. Once you’re up and running, produce effective videos by keeping them as short and sweet as possible. We’re living in the attention economy, where creators and brands are competing fiercely for audiences’ attention. It’s crucial that you keep your videos direct so that your viewers don’t click away. Keep opening credits and titles short, and get to the main section of your video as quickly as you can. If you tend to pause or hesitate as you speak, you can edit out these distractions with a handy tool like Replay Media Splitter. While longer videos will improve your watch time − which will boost your content in the algorithm − don’t be tempted to create filler content. Make sure that every second is providing value to the person watching.
  1. Let your viewers know what to expect. Be consistent in your subject matter, and consistent in the timing and frequency of new posts. Posting familiar content on a regular basis like this will help you to build up your audience. If sticking to a schedule sounds challenging, try to build up a backlog of content so that you’ll always have something to post, even when life outside of YouTube gets in the way. Finally, think about developing your videos as part of a series to get viewers hooked on your content, and waiting eagerly for the next instalment.
  1. Remember − “Like, subscribe and share!” Promotion is key. At the end of your video, add links to your other popular videos, and remind the viewer to subscribe to your channel and opt-in to notifications. Ask them to like the video and comment too − this engagement will work wonders for your position in the ranks. To go the extra mile, collaborate with other YouTubers by featuring in their videos, or inviting them to appear in yours. With this, you can cross-promote and share followers between you. It’s a win-win.
  1. Check out your analytics. From your Creator Studio, you can compare the performance of your videos and work out which is resonating best with your audience. To give your videos a boost, try employing SEO techniques, such as by including keywords in your video titles and writing detailed descriptions. While this can be a little more time-consuming, it’s definitely worth your while.

Of course, it goes without saying that the success of your YouTube channel will also rely on the quality of the video itself. When you need to edit your videos to be the best they can be, look no further than Replay Capture Suite for everything you need to make stunning, engaging content.

6 Countries Digital Nomads Can Move to Right Now

Recently, global travel restrictions have made it difficult for many of us to travel outside of the United States. With the majority of people no longer working in a physical office and unlikely to return to one in the near future, the itch to travel is even greater. The flexibility of remote work only amplifies this desire, as all you really need for your virtual office  is a computer, phone, good internet connection, and the latest version of Replay Capture Suite

Photo and video editing experts Fix the Photo recommend Replay Capture Suite and its impressive suite of programs to capture any online video and audio. Each program comes with a straightforward interface and loads of resources to get started. Fix the Photo notes that Replay Telecorder will come especially in handy for those working remotely during the “new normal”. While for video and photo editing experts, Replay Media Splitter helps streamline their workflow, offering a host of video and audio editing capabilities.

In response to the shift to remote work, a number of countries have made digital nomad visas available to foreigners — in the case of six countries, U.S. nationals are also eligible to apply. For those of us seeking a change of scenery, these are the six countries that you can move your virtual office to right now.

Antigua and Barbuda

Digital nomads earning at least $50,000 annually can live and work on the islands of Antigua and Barbuda for up to two years, thanks to the country’s Nomad Digital Residence Program. At the time of writing the cost to apply is $1,500 for a single applicant, $2,000 for a couple and $3,000 for a family of three or more.

To enter the country, visa holders must present a negative coronavirus test within one week of arrival, and are monitored for any symptoms for up to 14 days.

Aruba

As part of Aruba’s recently announced One Happy Workation program, U.S. visitors can stay up to 90 days by booking a package-stay program at a participating hotel, villa or condominium. Applicants are not required to book a participating stay but the website includes many attractive options to choose from!

Barbados

The Barbados Welcome Stamp program allows visitors earning at least $50,000 annually, including U.S. nationals, to stay on the island visa-free for up to one year. At the time of writing, the online application fee is $2,000 for individuals and $3,000 for families. Those traveling to Barbados for remote work or pleasure during the pandemic must follow new travel protocols.

Jamaica

U.S. nationals are able to travel to Jamaica, however the entry requirements vary depending on the state. Those who identify as business travelers will be given a coronavirus test upon entry into the country. While most travelers are given a 30-day visa on arrival, they can apply for the longer stay visa for digital nomads.

Estonia

On August 1, the Republic of Estonia launched its digital nomad visa that allows foreigners to stay in Estonia for up to a year. Applicants must earn a gross monthly salary of at least 3,000 euros (about $3,530) for a remote job, which is an extension of Estonia’s e-Residency program for foreign entrepreneurs.

At the time of writing, U.S. nationals are not able to visit the country for tourism-related purposes, but they are allowed in for the purpose of work or study. On arrival, foreigners must self-quarantine for 14 days.

Georgia

Lastly, on July 16 this tiny country bordering Russia and the Black Sea, announced a new program for foreigners to work remotely from the country. Applicants will be able to apply soon, and must provide proof of employment, as well as consent to self-quarantine for 14 days to be considered. As in the case of Estonia, U.S. Nationals are not able to enter Georgia for tourism, and must be granted a long-term visa of at least six months, traveling for business with a special permit or a spouse of a Georgian citizen.

While the “new normal” has made everyday pleasures like international travel difficult for many of us, select countries are beginning to open up their borders, particularly to digital nomads. If you have the flexibility and are already working outside of a physical office, consider one of the six countries mentioned above for a change of scenery.

How Online Video Streaming Technology Has Changed

Today, technological advancements are being made faster than ever before. With companies everywhere releasing regular updates to their hardware and software, we are able to do more with greater efficiency and ease. However, this fast pace of change can make it difficult for technology consumers — us — to keep up. Which shiniest gadget to buy? Which software update to install? As it turns out, choosing great software is often much more important than choosing the machine that runs it. With the most up to date version installed, you’ll benefit from the latest features including important security updates, bug fixes and compatibility enhancements.

Recently, online video streaming technology has changed dramatically, and its popularity increased exponentially to match.  So much so, that many companies have been built on offering online video streaming as their main value proposition. The shift comes as no surprise, as in the last ten years online video has become essential to how people are entertained, how students learn, and how businesses communicate. In fact, a recent report estimates that more than two-thirds of global consumer internet traffic is already comprised of video

In the last decade, the most notable changes to online video streaming include:

  • An increase from 10% to 80% of online videos that were encoded using the H.264 compression format (the most commonly used format for recording, compression, and distribution of video content) in a span of just two years, between 2010 and 2012
  • A near-complete shift away from historical Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) as a means of sharing video. With HTTP, a video first needed to be downloaded before playback could begin. Now, users have shifted to custom protocols and servers built for a new type of online video delivery called streaming — what we rely on today
  • The rise and fall of multicast as a means of online video delivery
  • Introduction of Smooth Streaming by Microsoft, HLS, HDS, and DASH, which have driven a resurgence in HTTP-based video delivery

Most users have seen first-hand how greatly online video streaming technology has changed, thanks in part to the long list of applications and offerings available, such as YouTube and Netflix, just to name a few. However, the biggest changes have taken place under the hood. To avoid security and compatibility issues in particular, companies have needed to update their hardware and software over the years in tandem. At Applian, we’re no different! Our experts stay up to date on the latest developments, so that our customers can capture and download online video safely and effortlessly.

With the Replay Capture Suite, you get access to seven incredible programs in one place, and the ability to record any online video of your choosing. Replay Capture Suite gives you the tools to record virtually any format streaming online, and on any device. To get the most out of our software, make sure that you’ve downloaded the most recent copy, which will let you capture and download video with ease, without needing to worry about the latest developments in the online video streaming ecosystem — we take care of that for you!

4 Documentaries That Will Change the Way You Think About Planet Earth

During these the past few months, there was a shared, global surge in awareness about the impact that humans have on the planet. With significantly lower levels of air pollution in main city centres such as Paris, Beijing and New York, the ability to witness bioluminescence in oceans, and the return of wildlife back to cities, humans’ impact on the planet has never been more apparent. For those of us who are most curious about the flora and fauna of the planet, we’ve corralled 4 documentaries that you simply must watch — they will truly change the way you think about the earth!

Night on Earth

There just isn’t another documentary out there that comes even close to Night on Earth. With the help of state-of-the-art technology, the docuseries takes us from the African Savanna to the Peruvian desert to show us the lives of predators and prey, and how closely they are linked to the moon’s cycles. Shot completely during nighttime hours, you will often forget that the images on-screen were recorded in complete darkness. Let Night on Earth lift the veil of the night’s darkness and discover a whole other world you’ve never seen.

Chasing Coral

It was just a few years ago that we began to take notice about experts’ warnings regarding the disappearing coral in our oceans. The scientific community has found that warmer water temperatures can result in coral bleaching — an unfortunate phenomenon that takes place when the water is too warm and corals expel the algae (zooxanthellae) that lives in their tissues, causing the coral to turn completely white. While a bleached coral is not dead, and in fact corals can survive a bleaching event, they are under more stress and are at risk of dying. With that in mind, Chasing Coral is about a team of divers, scientists and photographers around the world who document the disappearance of coral reefs, providing an eye-opening look at the often irreversible human impact on the planet.

The Ivory Game

In this saddening look at the illegal ivory trade in China and Hong Kong, The Ivory Game directors Keif Davidson, Richard Ladkani and their crew spend 16 months undercover to investigate the killing of elephants for their tusks and the smuggling of ivory to China. While the trade is illegal, there is a thriving black market where corrupt business practices and dealings occur, constantly feeding the demand for ivory in China and Hong Kong, where it is seen as a status symbol. The film takes viewers from Tanzania, Kenya, and Zambia to China, Hong Kong, and Vietnam, with a brief stop in London.

A Plastic Ocean

Award-winning documentary, A Plastic Ocean, is an adventure film that was shot in more than 20 locations over the span of four years. Explorers Craig Leeson and Tanya Streeter plus a team of international scientists explore the fragile state of our oceans to reveal the alarming causes and consequences of plastic pollution, while sharing working solutions that can be put into immediate effect.

With the option to create a grid of all chat members, it’s a great way to create teams if your group is large enough. Record the action so that you can replay and share your favorite moments. A great app for this is Houseparty, which comes with a selection of games to play with your friends, and its split-screen capabilities keeps games fun and fast-paced for everyone. All you need to do is invite your friends.

Hosting A Karaoke Night:

If you’re looking to keep your spirits up, one way to do it is by hosting a virtual happy hour, featuring your favorite karaoke songs. You may want to share one (or a few) of your favorite seasonal recipes with your friends, and then join each other for a night of belting out your favorite sing-alongs. If you want to mix it up with your mixers, try adding in some trivia about your favorite bands before you start so that you can bring your virtual karaoke night to the next level. Just make sure you don’t miss a moment of it.

Throwing A Virtual Book Brunch:

Few things are as restorative as joining up with a group to have a deep chat over a great book and delicious food. If themed brunches are your thing, you can set up the theme of your brunch to coincide with the topic of your selected reading. Connect with friends worldwide if you really want to add to the fun. It may become the highlight of your week.

When it comes to linking up online, the possibilities are endless, and they keep growing everyday. All you need is some imagination, a great idea, and the perfect tools to make sure that you don’t miss out on a single minute. Our pick? Replay Telecorder. It can record any video conferencing applications in background mode, so you can enjoy an uninterrupted connection.

How does it work?

  1. Get your group together. You can invite your group attendees manually or just make sure everyone has a custom link to the meeting. That way you can keep them private and invite only who you want.
  2. Start your video conferencing application. Replay Telecorder works great with Skype, Google Hangouts. Zoom, and any application with similar features.
  3. Record and save for playback later. As soon as you join the call, just hit “Record” and you’re all set. You can stop recording anytime you like. It’s really that easy.

Getting started is easy. Get your group together, get creative, and then make sure you have the latest version of Replay Telecorder, so that you can save the best moments (or save your best moves to practice) for later. With the right tools, your house may become your favorite place to meet up with your favorite people!
