9 Powerful Hacks for the Ultimate Netflix Experience

Love kicking back for a relaxing night with Netflix? Us too. No matter how much time you spend watching, though, you’ll never be a real power user if you don’t poke around under the entertainment hood. We took the time to really dive in (so you don’t have to), and rounded up a collection of tricks will greatly improve your Netflix experience.

Here are our top tips to take your Netflix binges to the next level:

1. Switch to high quality

High quality is the best quality when you’re enjoying movies online. You can manually force HD playback on Netflix on your TV to ensure your media is always shown in the highest-quality possible. First, make sure that your internet connection supports streaming 5 megabits/second or more, then log in and go to Account Settings > Playback Settings to select high quality.

(Note: Chrome users won’t be able to use this trick – sorry!)

2. Stream off peak hours

This may seem a little more on the obvious side, but choosing to stream Netflix shows NOT during peak hours will always award you with better quality. When less people are using Netflix overall, it improves downstream data traffic and thus, your viewing experience.

3. Use your phone as a remote

Lost the remote in your couch cushions again? You can turn any smartphone into a remote control just by downloading the Netflix app for iPhone, Android or Windows Phone. Once installed and synced properly, you’ll be able to play, pause, stop and browse all from your connected device. Technology rules.

4. Create multiple profiles

We all have those guilty, yet amazing, pleasures we jump to when no one else is around to judge our viewing habits. Now you don’t have to hide when you create multiple profiles on Netflix! It’s free, easy to set up, and you’ll be able to generate a different profile for your chick flicks, horror movies, or anything else you may want to keep separate from your main account.

5. Say goodbye to buffering

Buffering movies and shows on your laptop can be a serious time-waster. To get rid of buffering in Netflix while playing a title, select Shift+Opt (Shift+Alt for Windows) and left click to open up a “hidden” menu called the Stream Manage. You’ll find buffering fixes, along with some other helpful tips!

(Note: For Chrome users, press Ctrl+Shift+Alt/Opt+S to access this menu.)

6. Find the best flicks

Reddit brings out the best (and sometimes worst) parts of the Internet. Use it to your advantage and head to r/netflixbestof to check out all of the best, most painstakingly-selected shows and movies to see so you never have to browse aimlessly again.

7. Record anything for later

Technology now allows us to record streaming movies and television shows from Netflix to watch forever, even after the site has taken them down. Using Replay Video Capture, you can screen record ANYTHING on Netflix in amazingly high-quality formats.

8. Enhance your viewing

Browser extensions are better than they’ve ever been. With one add-on in Chrome called Netflix Enhancements, you can instantly access IMDB profiles, movie trailers, pop-up ratings from sources like Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes, and more. You can even customize what you see once it’s installed.

9. Utilize keyboard shortcuts

Because streaming TV shows and movies should be as efficient as any other kind of digital hacking, Netflix keyboard shortcuts exist to streamline your viewing:

  • Play/Pause – Space bar OR Enter key
  • Play – Page Up key
  • Pause – Page Down key
  • Enable Full screen – F key
  • Disable Full screen – Esc key
  • Rewind 10 seconds – Shift + Left Arrow
  • Fast Forward 10 seconds – Shift + Right Arrow
  • Volume Up/Down – Up Arrow/Down Arrow
  • Mute On/Off – M key
  • Toggle by frame – CTRL + Space bar

Making Room for Romance: 8 Best Valentine’s Movies to Watch Online

Ahhhh, love is in the air and we’re gearing up for an awesome Valentine’s movie marathon with our favorite people.

No matter your plans this Valentine’s Day, we’ve scoured the collections from Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime to find the best romantic movies available to stream online. Watch them with a loved one after a nice meal, or by yourself whenever you want! As always, you can record streaming movies to watch offline whenever, wherever using the power of Replay Video Capture.

Here are the best romantic movies you can stream online now:

1. Titanic (1997) // Amazon Prime

(GIF via thefilmagazine.com)

When you think of super-romantic 90’s movies, Titanic comes to mind first just about every time. It’s the quintessential Valentine’s Day movie that blasted DiCaprio and Winslet into stardom, as well as a beautifully-directed visual experience. If you’re gonna snuggle up to one film this year, make this one it. Stream Titanic online and record from Amazon Prime with Replay Video Capture

2. How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (2003) // Netflix

(GIF via itxelac.tumblr.com)

Well before Interstellar and True Detective, Matthew McConaughey was an early 2000’s heartthrob in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. The movie follows McConaughey’s character (a high profile ad guy) who places a bet that he can make any woman fall in love with him in 10 days. Plot twist! Kate Hudson’s character has a different agenda. Stream How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days online and record from Netflix with Replay Video Capture

3. Love Actually (2003) // Netflix

(GIF via maudit.tumblr.com)

There’s something about a British romantic comedy that’s just overwhelmingly wonderful. Love Actually is one of the most-watched flicks from year-to-year, and understandably so. With endless A-list actors and other familiar faces, and a weaving plot of friendships and love stories, it’s a film of unrequited feelings and classic charms. Stream Love Actually online and record from Netflix with Replay Video Capture

4. Annie Hall (1977) // Hulu

(GIF via totalfilm.tumblr.com)

You’ll either love it or hate it, but Annie Hall is a classic that’ll never be anything less. Arguably Woody Allen’s best film of all time (and one that he also stars in), it’s a perfectly-written rom-com that covers every angle of new and neurotic love. With Diane Keaton gleaming as Allen’s love interest, it’s a stunning representation of life and love in the 1970’s. Stream Annie Hall online and record from Hulu with Replay Video Capture

5. Amélie (2001) // Hulu

(GIF via  antrinh53.tumblr.com)

Love foreign films? Quirky plot points? Beautiful cinematography? Amélie is one of those incredibly whimsical, romantic journeys that can break down language barriers (and probably the ones in your heart, too). A girl who takes pleasure in the little things in life, Amelie’s goal in life is to help others, including a lonely shop owner. Stream Amélie online and record from Hulu with Replay Video Capture

6. Runaway Bride (1999) // Amazon Prime

(GIF via splendiferoushoney.tumblr.com)

She can’t commit, but she’s so darn endearing! In quite possibly one of Julia Roberts’ most well-known, highly-acclaimed roles, Runaway Bride is a late 90’s romance we’ll love forever. With Richard Gere playing the older, handsome man attempting to get this pathological wedding-ditcher to finally settle down for good, it’s got the spirit and heart to make us “aww” all over the place. Stream Runaway Bride online and record from Amazon Prime with Replay Video Capture

7. Pretty in Pink (1986) // Amazon Prime

(GIF via youtube.com)

It doesn’t matter if you grew up in the 1980’s or not — Pretty in Pink is a timeless coming-of-age film that more than likely inspired your teenage love life. Another iconic John Hughes film, it features a young, unpopular and terribly lovesick Molly Ringwald whose infatuation with the trendy, rich boy in school is basically all-consuming. Stream Pretty in Pink online and record from Amazon Prime with Replay Video Capture

8. Lars and the Real Girl (2007) // Amazon Prime

(GIF via google.com)

We still can’t quite tell if it’s more bizarre or creative, but Lars and the Real Girl is most certainly unique. Ryan Gosling (as Lars) and his girl (an anatomically correct doll) have an unconventional kind of love that most people just don’t understand. If you’re open-minded and your loved one is too, it’s a super-weird, can’t-miss kind of love story. Stream Lars and the Real Girl online and record from Amazon Prime with Replay Video Capture

Save Your Media: Why Netflix Will Never Be Perfect

We love Netflix, but it isn’t a perfect streaming service. The truth is, it can’t be.

With growing competition, incomplete collections, and temporary trademarks on titles, Netflix’s shortcomings across a myriad of areas will likely hinder it from becoming the “all-powerful streaming service” we thought it might be just a few years ago. These limitations and imperfections are some of the many reasons why it’s important to record Netflix TV shows and movies with Replay Video Capture, and save them for offline viewing before they inevitably disappear.

Market Share

This chart below, created by Nielsen, shows the penetration of streaming services and subscription video on demand services. Netflix leads the pack of streaming online with over 61 million subscribers and 36% of the market, but Amazon and Hulu also take close to 20%.

And, research has shown that Amazon’s popularity and market share is only growing as the company gathers more customers through their Prime service,  gain more title contracts, and generate more original series.

Narrow Collection

At first glance, its impressive library of movies and shows, both original and licensed, seems never-ending. But, it does end. With only around 13,300 titles offered worldwide, Netflix’s collection is actually pretty limited in terms of selection. And, because of the ongoing rivalry between Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, it’s impossible to provide a truly complete catalog at all times and win over the entirety of the market.

Temporary Licensing

Part of this narrow collection is due to the structure and process of licensing content. Netflix is frequently changing up their online offerings; the reliability of their shows and movies are completely dependent on licensing agreements made with networks and filmmakers.

According to Investopedia, these agreements could “allow Netflix to stream all seasons of [a] show in full through its online platform for one, three or five years. The licensing agreement can be renegotiated after the set time period ends, or Netflix could drop the show from its library if viewer interest is not high enough to warrant the cost.”

Essentially, Netflix can drop content on a whim. And what if that show or movie they deemed ‘not popular enough’ was your all-time favorite? Download Replay Video Capture to record and save all of your favorite Netflix content, before time is up!

What’s New to Watch on Netflix: July 2016

While we may still be in mourning from Netflix‘s latest round of content cuts, there are things to be thankful for. In this case, that means a fresh batch of movies and TV shows to dive into (even if it is for a limited time…).

This July, we have a number of higher-profile films and a handful of new series seasons available starting the first of the month. Check out some of the top movies and shows new to Netflix in July, 2016 – you can watch and save them all with Replay Video Capture!

1. Back to the Future (I, II & III)

GIF via crosseyed.tumblr.com

Science-fiction meets adventure meets comedy in the classic 1980’s trilogy, Back to the Future. If you’re into time travel, quirky scientists and amazing 80’s references, you definitely want to get your hands on this series.

2. The Lovely Bones

GIF via allmoviegifs.tumblr.com

Based on the best-selling novel by Alice Sebold, The Lovely Bones is a heartbreaking but beautiful story of a young girl watching over her family from beyond. Bring tissues!

3. Turner and Hooch

GIF via moviefancentral.com

Tom Hanks plays Turner, a by-the-books kind of cop, while Hooch is a slobbery and chaotic, yet lovable dog. When the two come together in Turner and Hooch, you know it’ll be a mess.

4. Mean Girls

GIF via dude-itz-liz.tumblr.com

Everyone loves a mean girl, right? Mean Girls is an insanely quotable teen comedy, starring Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams, where the Plastics rule.

5. Lethal Weapon (1-4)

GIF via warnerbrosentertainment.tumblr.com

Some of Danny Glover’s finest moments come from the Lethal Weapon movie franchise. Two tough-as-nails L.A.P.D officers are partnered up to do some good – one of them a seasoned cop and the other a suicidal maniac.

6. Cheaper by the Dozen

GIF via wifflegif.tumblr.com

Comedy genius Steve Martin stars in Cheaper by the Dozen, a movie about (you guessed it) a family with 12 kids. With an incredibly full house and ambitious minds sparking, there’s tension, laughter and a few heartfelt moments.

7. Todd Margaret (Season 3)

GIF via officerserpico.tumblr.com

David Cross plays the increasingly unlucky and awkward Todd Margaret, a man who has moved to London for a job he knows nothing about. Any fan of Arrested Development won’t want to miss this one!

8. Catwoman

GIF via angelsalveje.tumblr.com

There have been a few versions of Catwoman over the years, but this time it’s Halle Berry’s turn. The 2004 movie follows the classic DC Comics storyline of the mild-mannered employee by day, superhero by night. Not great, but entertaining.

The Best Shows About to Leave Netflix: July 2016

Out with the old and in with the new! Every month, Netflix shuffles in new content, while at the same time removing old favorites, as part of their constantly rotating catalog of movies and shows.

Netflix gets rid of content at the drop of a hat – what if that show or movie was your all-time favorite? Lucky for you media streamers, Replay Video Capture exists so you can watch, record and save anything from Netflix before your luck runs out.

Here are some of the top titles leaving Netflix in July, 2016 – get them while you still can!

1. Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood

He’s thoughtful, respectful and provides a ton of good, clean fun for the kids (both young and old). Armed with a closet full of sweaters and the biggest heart television’s ever seen, you’ll want to record and save every second of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood before it disappears.

2. Kitchen Nightmares

If you like food, reality shows, and get a kick out of foul-mouthed, yet brilliant, chefs, Kitchen Nightmares is the perfect show for you to capture before it leaves Netflix. Chef Gordon Ramsey travels the world in search of desperate restaurants in need of a serious helping hand.

3. Numb3rs

This classic mid-2000’s crime show has the perfect combination of good detective work and super-smarts. Numb3rs stars David Krumholtz and Rob Morrow as brothers who work together to solve incredible mysteries; something you certainly won’t want to miss out on.

4. Ghost Whisperer

The supernatural drama, Ghost Whisperer, follows the gripping story of a young woman who can communicate with those who have “passed on.” Quirky, fascinating and just a little eerie, this is another series you shouldn’t pass up before it’s gone.

5. MacGyver

The inspiration for many jokes and hilarious skits over the years, MacGyver is a classic 1980’s action-adventure television show that many hold near and dear. He’s a genius who can get out of just about any mess, using just about any random object. Trust us, you need this for your recorded collection.

6. Medium

Medium shares the based-on-a-true-story tale of a woman working at the District Attorney’s office who has uncanny psychic abilities. Using these gifts for good, she’s able to help crack many cases and solve crimes around the country – don’t miss this medium magic!

The Best Worst Movies to Stream & Record Now

Some movies are amazingly brilliant, and some are so amazingly bad that it’s a wonder how they were ever conceptualized. Today, we’d like to honor some of those horrible, yet somehow captivating, films available online.

You can stream all of the terrible/awesome movies your heart can handle straight from your browser, then use Replay Video Capture to keep them forever. To get started, just fire up the software, start playing your top picks on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime, and start recording.

Take a look at some of our favorite worst movies to stream and save on Netflix right now:

1. Gigli

If you’ve ever wanted to see J. Lo pretend to be a “fatally gorgeous” gangster, please record and save this movie from Netflix. Ben Affleck (Gigli) also stars in this quintessentially awful/amazing movie from the early 2000’s, in which a kidnapping goes terribly awry. Sloppy, bizarre and yet somehow amazing.

(GIF via bustle.com)

2. Killer Mermaid

Somewhat creepy and terribly written, this flick is perfect for you horror lovers – if you want to laugh rather than being scared. The general plot line involves two American women on a vacation in the Mediterranean, where they stumble upon the lair of (you guessed it) a killer mermaid. This film is available to stream on Netflix, and definitely worth it for your next movie night.

(GIF via zombooyah2thesequel.tumblr.com)

3. Left Behind

Nicolas Cage is reason enough to watch and save this Armageddon based masterpiece from Netflix. In Left Behind, a handful of survivors are “left behind” after millions vanish; the world is plunged into chaos. And then there was Nic Cage.

(GIF via yahooentertainment.tumblr.com)

4. John Dies at the End

Comedy meets terror in this dark flick on Netflix. A new drug, referred to as Soy Sauce, promises an out-of-body experience like no other. People are scrambling for it, but there are (obviously) consequences. We won’t give you any other spoilers — this movie is perfect for livening up a boring evening.

(GIF via wifflegif.com)

5. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny

This movie is actually pretty good if you’re into martial arts flicks, though still laughable compared to the original. Jason Scott Lee stars as a warlord hell-bent on stealing a sword from the good guys (and martial arts masters). Get a hold of this one on Netflix before your next kung fu binge!

The State of Online TV Streaming: Today’s Top Players

Online streaming has rapidly become the must-have accessory in this big, digital world of ours. People far and wide are cutting the cable cord and adopting streaming services to get their fix of sitcoms and late-night movies, either through the computer or channeled directly to the television set.

It was shared in Statista that last year alone “seventy-six percent of American households reported having a video-on-demand subscription,” and that percentage is only growing as the convenience factor is too tempting to pass up.

With access to nearly any television show, documentary, classic film or big time Hollywood flick, it’s really no wonder that so many are drawn to the broad, always-on collection. If you have decent Wi-Fi and a connected device, you’ve got access to it all.

Top Players

As it’s pretty easily assumed, the biggest names in online streaming subscriptions today are Netflix and Amazon, with the Hulu Package holding up third place. Some families subscribe to all three, but most have just one of the services: Netflix. In fact, Netflix is in 36% of all American TV households, while Amazon is in 13% and Hulu Plus is in 6.5%, according to Nielsen.

Netflix

Just this summer, Netflix surpassed 65 million subscribers with its $8/month service, and expanded its reach internationally, grounding its roots as the world’s most popular streaming service. With the creation of its Netflix Originals, such as “Orange is the New Black,” “Daredevil” and “House of Cards,” along with close to 7,000 other titles, consumers are loving the high-quality video content within a binge watching-enabled platform.

Amazon

At 40 million subscribers, some arguably coming by association with it’s Prime Package, Amazon ranks second on the list of most-used streaming subscriptions. While they may not have as many attractive titles in their collection, they do have the pull of their popular Prime plan that offers unlimited video streaming in addition to free 2-day shipping in their online marketplace for $99/year.

Hulu

Hulu lags behind with 9 million subscribers, though they experienced a generous percentage of growth from 2014 to 2015. With a recent partnership with Showtime, along with the extensive collection of media, they hope to expand their customer base even more rapidly.
