Update Your Holiday Playlist with Great Songs

A couple weeks of a classic holiday music playlist can send even the most festive into a cantankerous mood spiral – how many times can one listen to Jingle Bells between Thanksgiving and Christmas, before going mad? Well, we’re throwing you a lifeline to get through the New Year while still jamming without soul crushing redundancy. Here are our favorite new releases to help you shake up your holiday playlist and see out the year with a bang.

We’re The Lucky Ones – The Marías

A romantic holiday melody by the Marias perfect for that cozy cabin weekend away with your love.

A Dreamer’s Holiday – Julien Baker

A favorite Spotify recommended artist for indie pop lovers, Julien Baker delivers exactly what the title states, a dreamy holiday tune.

Blackout Christmas – VÉRITÉ

When you need some electropop to make that playlist pop, Vérité will add some downtown cool with this number about being lowkey heartbroken during the holidays but highkey effortlessly cool.

Warm on a Christmas Night – HONNE

Here’s your flirty holiday serenade to play right when you lock eyes across a socially distanced outdoor Christmas party with your crush.

Six heures d’avion nous séparent – MIKA, Pierre Lapointe

Because it’s French. Because 2020 was a hard year. So, let’s daydream of Christmas in Paris.

Last Christmas – Tinashe

This is the update on our WHAM! Christmas favorite that maintains the upbeat rhythm of the original but reworked with Tinashe’s sexy vocals. Perfect song to play when you’re feeling yourself and ready for the mistletoe.

Hear the Bells – Calexico

Imagine dancing in the middle of Joshua Tree, with only the lights around a cactus to light your way.

All Winter – Roses & Revolutions

A melodic and nostalgic number that builds up to a crescendo, not unlike the holidays themselves.

Gettin’ Away for the Holidays – Liz Longley

A humorous anthem for everyone who forgoes going home for the holidays in favor of going to Tulum.

Auld Lang Syne – Betsy Phillips, Robby Hecht

A beautiful acoustic duet of Auld Lang Syne, simply irresistible.

The Best Christmas Movies to Remind You of Being a Kid During the Holidays

Nowadays, the holidays can feel like a time of stress rather than a time of festivities − whether from the gift-buying rush, surviving family get-togethers, or paying off those rising bills. But once upon a time, back in those childhood days, it really was the most magical time of the year. Unfortunately, you can’t travel back in time…. But you can hit record and rewind. Here’s our favorite list of movies to watch and record throughout the holiday season.

A Charlie Brown Christmas and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

A ruckus was created earlier in the year when it was announced that none of the Charlie Brown holiday specials would be airing on network television, after ABC pulled the plug on a 55-year streak. But where there’s a network void, there’s a streaming network ready to bridge the gap. Apple+ pledged to to fulfill Snoopy deprivation by making each holiday special available for free, even to non-subscribers, on limited days. So all the Peanuts holiday specials are at the top of our watch and record holiday movie list.

Available on: Apple+

Gremlins

Gremlins is a favorite for anyone who grew up in the 80s, cult movie loyalists and

hipsters. But with the holiday genre so full of options, it can sometimes be lost in the crowd. When it does air, make sure you hit record, to rewatch the original horror x Christmas movie.

Available on: YouTube

The Muppet Christmas Carol

Gen Z-ers only seem to vaguely know who the Muppets are but for Millennials and Generation X, they were everything. Literally, they did everything from take Manhattan, live in Space, and in The Muppet Christmas Carol, recreate Dickens’ classic. It holds up, seriously. Press record and watch it again to see.

Available on: YouTube

A Christmas Story

A Christmas Story should not make this list as TBS’ 24 hour tradition of airing the movie continuously makes it sort of unnecessary, yet, it still does because even with a 24 hour airing, we know opening presents, sledding, cooking holiday dinner, etc. might have you missing major scenes. And no one wants to miss their favorite from this classic, whether it’s electric sex from the leg lamp in the window, or when Ralphie finally does shoot his eye out!

Available on: YouTube

Love, Actually

Ok, while Love, Actually isn’t as childlike as our other selections, it was released a full 17 years ago! For everyone who was still a teen or tween when this movie came out, it gave you high hopes for what Christmas could be like when falling in love as a grown up. Love, Actually was so universally well received, it’s now a modern classic and maybe remains the heavyweight champion in holiday rom-coms.

You’ve Got Mail

In this classic, late 90s Tom Hanks / Meg Ryan romcom, You’ve Got Mail gives us the story of two people in an online romance — AOL, anyone? — who are unaware they are also business rivals. Watch as they cross paths in reality, and share a completely different relationship over email. This movie was the third pairing of Hanks and Ryan, following Joe Versus the Volcano (1990) and Sleepless in Seattle (1993). While You’ve Got Mail isn’t an Oscar-worthy flick, it’s definitely a feel-good movie we can all appreciate!

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

John Candy and Steve Martin together on-screen? Thanksgiving movies just don’t get any better than this. In Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Candy and Martin make an unlikely pair of travel companions trying to get home for Thanksgiving. Follow along on their hilarious adventure.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving originally aired in November 1973, and actually won an Emmy award the following year! Until 2019, the special continued to be aired on prime time television on the ABC network. Now, you can catch it on Apple TV for a short period of time, or whenever suits you best on Amazon Prime. When Peppermint Patty invites herself and her friends over to Charlie Brown’s for Thanksgiving, along with Linus, Snoopy, and Woodstock in the mix, Charlie Brown attempts to host a successful Thanksgiving dinner. Will it go off without a hitch? This family-favorite will be sure to put a smile on your face.

The New World

The New World stars Colin Farrell as Captain John Smith, Q’orianka Kilcher as Pochantos and Christian Bale as John Rolfe, a British settler, bringing the previously only animated story of Pochantos to life. Captain John Smith arrives with a British expedition in Virginia in 1607, but is captured by Native Americans. His life is spared thanks to Pocahontas, the daughter of the tribe’s chief. Smith and Pocahontas fall in love, to the strong disapproval of both the Native Americans and British. As a result, Smith is sent away and reported dead. A heartbroken Pocahontas marries Rolfe, but when Smith turns up alive, she is torn between the two men.

Meet the Parents

Many of us can relate to Meet the Parents — after all, holidays are often a perfect opportunity to meet the family of a significant other. At least most of us can say that we haven’t endured the shenanigans and mishaps that Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) has to when meeting his girlfriend’s parents — starring Robert DeNiro and Blythe Danner. Focker’s first visit to Pam’s parents’ house turns out to be a complete nightmare — more than he could have ever imagined. Hoping to use the weekend as a chance to propose to his girlfriend in front of family, he only succeeds in getting on his prospective father-in-law’s bad side and almost destroys their home in the process — yikes!

With seven incredibly useful programs for Mac and Windows, you’ve got everything you need to capture and save all your favorite Thanksgiving movies — to enjoy before and after turkey dinner. Hocus Pocus

Hocus Pocus is a must-see, Halloween classic, starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. The Sanderson sisters (Midler, Parker and Najimy) were executed 300 years ago for practicing dark witchcraft, but now, they’ve returned. Thanks to a combination of a spell spoken before their demise and the accidental actions of the new-kid-in-town, Max, the sisters will do whatever it takes to secure their continuing existence. The only trouble is they have just one night to do it…

Rocky Horror Picture Show

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a cult-classic that draws fans to movie theatres every Halloween to relive the time warp, again and again. Sweethearts Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon), end up stuck with a flat tire during a storm, leading them to discover the eerie mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite scientist. As their innocence is lost, Brad and Janet meet a houseful of peculiar characters, including a rocking biker and a creepy butler. With the help of elaborate dances and rock songs, Frank-N-Furter unveils his latest creation: a muscular man named “Rocky.”

IT

The IT movie is based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel of the same name. Both the original and 2017 remake follow seven young outcasts in Derry, Maine, who are about to face their worst nightmare — an ancient, haunting evil that emerges from the sewer every 27 years to prey on the town’s children. Pledging to band together over the course of one horrifying summer, the friends must overcome their own personal fears to defeat the murderous, bloodthirsty clown, otherwise known as Pennywise.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

The Exorcism of Emily Rose is loosely based on the true story of Anneliese Michel, who, it is believed was possessed by demons, and underwent Catholic exorcism rites during the year leading up to her death. In the movie, Rev. Moore is prosecuted for the wrongful death of a girl believed to be demonically possessed, because he administered the church-sanctioned exorcism that ultimately killed her. Watch as prosecuting attorney Ethan Thomas fights to prove that Emily actually suffered from schizophrenia and should have been medically diagnosed, while the defense maintains Emily’s condition cannot be explained by science alone.

Beetlejuice

After their fatal car accident, the spirits of Barbara and Adam are stuck haunting their country residence, unable to leave the house. When the unbearable Deetzes (Catherine O’Hara and Jeffrey Jones), and their teen daughter (Winona Ryder) buy the home, the Maitlands unsuccessfully attempt to scare them away. Instead, their efforts attract Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), a rowdy spirit whose “help” quickly spells trouble for the Maitlands and Lydia.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

If you’re looking for a family-friendly Halloween movie, look no further than this Tim Burton animated classic. The Nightmare Before Christmas follows the adventures of Jack Skellington, Halloweentown’s beloved pumpkin king. Bored with the same annual routine of frightening people in the “real world,” Jack accidentally stumbles on Christmastown — a stark contrast to Halloweentown. Bright colors and warm spirits, Jack gets a new lease on life, and plots to bring Christmas under his control by kidnapping Santa Claus and taking over the job. Jack soon discovers though, that even the best-laid plans don’t always turn out…

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

This 2003 remake of the horror classic follows a group of young travelers who come across an isolated rural home while driving through Texas on their way back from Mexico. Unfortunately for them, the dilapidated house is actually the residence of a family of twisted backwoods killers, most notably a merciless, masked man known as Leatherface, who begins to hunt the stranded youths down. Whether any of the friends will survive their nightmare is yet to be determined…

Online Music Streaming in Numbers: The State of Online Music Streaming Today

For the vast majority of users, online streaming is now the preferred method for viewing TV shows, movies, sports, and events, as well as listening to music. While the portion of music listeners turning to streaming to get their fix varies by country, global statistics point to one undeniable trend: the popularity of online music streaming is growing at an incredible rate.

Research shows that streaming increased from 7% of the U.S. music market’s revenues in 2010 to a whopping 80% in 2019. The numbers also point to jaw-dropping growth in revenues from music streaming services by nearly 20% in 2019 to $8.8 billion, accounting for the largest share of the music industry revenues at 79.5%. Here, “streaming” refers to a range of services, including ad-supported services like Vevo and YouTube, ad-supported tiers of services like Spotify, streaming radio services like Pandora and SiriusXM, and premium subscription services like Spotify Premium, Amazon Music, and Apple Music.

At an aggregate level, Goldman Sachs predicts that the value of the music streaming industry will rise to $28 billion by 2030. The data speaks for itself: not only are users more likely to consume music via online streaming, but they’re also willing to pay for it.

Currently, the top three players in music streaming include YouTube, Spotify and Apple Music. YouTube Music saw a 980% growth in the number of active users between 2017 and 2019. The tech giant reports that more than one billion music fans use their services for streaming music, while their YouTube Music and YouTube Premium services currently boast a combined 20 million subscribers. At the end of March 2020, Spotify reported 286 million monthly active users (including paid and free), and current estimates suggest that Apple Music has around 80 million paying subscribers.

While we’ve drastically changed the way that we consume music thanks to music streaming, this global shift hasn’t been immune to controversy. We all remember Taylor Swift’s three-year boycott of Spotify and her feud with Apple Music over royalties. And more recently, there’s a growing camp in the music industry that cannot agree on a valid system of verifying streams to count them toward music ranking charts.

Music streaming services have vowed to work more closely with the music industry and artists. However, as the landscape inevitably continues to evolve, we can’t be certain that there won’t be more controversies in the future.

Regardless of which streaming service you go with, there are tens of millions of songs waiting for you to explore. Cruise on over to one of the top-three streaming services: YouTube, Spotify or Apple Music for an abundance of artists, albums and playlists that you simply won’t be able to get enough of. Record all your favorites with Replay Music so that you can enjoy them whenever and from wherever you are!

If you’re not sure how to get started, take a look at our how-to guide, and get started enjoying all your favorite tracks. Make sure to get the latest version and get listening!

Veggie Chili Cornbread Casserole

Cornbread and chili together? Sounds like a match made in heaven. This recipe is oh-so-hearty but we can bet you’ll still be wanting seconds.

Cheddar Corn Fritters

There’s no denying these cheddar corn fritters are an indulgence — heaps of cheddar and spoonfuls of corn combine to create the perfect treat. Fry them on the pan until crispy and top them off with a helping of sour cream.

Pumpkin Spice Biscotti

Kicking off the sweet side of things on our list is pumpkin spice biscotti. This recipe offers a fun spin on pumpkin. With the addition of pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, and the finishing touch of dipping in white chocolate, you’ll be wondering how you ever enjoyed a cup of coffee without this treat.

Classic Pecan Pie

Grab that blanket, fire up Amazon Prime Video, and get started with some of these unmissable options from across the pond… ready to stream now.

Man vs. Wild

Drinking yak blood, eating a moose heart, and sleeping inside a camel… Think you could survive out in the wild? Maybe not… But you can watch all of Bear Grylls’ amazing wilderness feats from the safety of your sofa as he shows you how to survive when stranded in the world’s harshest environments. Brace yourself for edge-of-your-seat action in this series packed full of fascinating tips and stunning landscapes. It’s exhilarating, and educational, all at the same time.

Howards End

Expect beautiful costumes, very “proper” British accents and some incredible scenery in this TV adaptation of E.M. Forster’s Howards End. Follow the Schlegel sisters as they embark on their journey to seek love and meaning in a world that clashes with their independent and unconventional sensibilities. It’s a period drama that packs a punch, and will quickly have you hooked.

Blackadder

This timeless British comedy series has been a favorite for generations, and for good reason. The show follows the trials, and more often than not, failures of Edmund Blackadder (Rowan Atkinson), a plotting and scheming character looking to do whatever it takes to secure an easy-going life for himself. Each season finds Blackadder and his useless sidekick Baldrick in a different time period, with a different boss and different challenges, but the same old disappointing results. Also starring Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry, Blackadder is an age-old, laugh-a-minute series that’s not to be missed.

Wuthering Heights

Nothing gets more British than a dark and stormy hillside, and Wuthering Heights is full of them. Starring Kaya Scodelario and directed by Andrea Arnold (of American Honey and Fish Tank), this is an exciting and fresh take on the classic novel by Emily Brontë. Get ready for brooding stares, wind-whipped landscapes and tension you could cut with a knife in this superb British adaptation of the all-time favorite book.

Under the Skin

If we ever needed a reminder not to accept a ride from a stranger, then this should do the trick. Under the Skin stars an English-accented Scarlett Johanssen as the creepy, murderous, van-driving alien (yep, you heard that right) who preys on the unsuspecting men of Glasgow — picking them up, and leaving them never to be seen again. With striking and shocking imagery from director Jonathan Glazer, this movie offers a mind-bending experience that leaves you tip-toeing between the unwaveringly mundane of drizzly Glasgow, and the fantasy of Johanssen’s otherworldly underworld. You’ll leave this movie full of questions, but that’s all part of the fun.

I, Daniel Blake

Directed by Ken Loach, this Cannes and BAFTA winner tells the story of a widowed carpenter and a single mother who form a formidable bond in their struggle against the complicated and unforgiving British welfare system. Chronicling the reality of daily life for many working-class Brits just struggling to get by, I, Daniel Blake treats its characters with warmth and humanity, when the system treats them as nothing more than a number. It’s a heartwrencher and an eye-opener that will be sure to stick with you.

Tolkien

Nicholas Hoult stars as J.R.R. Tolkien, the incredible author behind the The Lord of the Rings series, in this biopic that covers Tolkien’s early life, career at Oxford University, and the friendships and relationships that defined him. Directed by Dome Karukoski and also starring Lily Collins, it’s a beautifully-shot movie that also takes us up to the outbreak of the First World War and the life-changing events that would inspire his famous Middle-earth novels. This one’s a must-watch for movie-lovers and literature-enthusiasts alike.

King Lear

Acting heavyweights Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson and Emily Watson are unstoppable forces in this modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare’s King Lear. With the play (thankfully) cut down to a more manageable 2 hours, this is Shakespeare not as you know it: think martial arts, helicopters and British military uniforms, to name a few. Plus, with a star turn for Florence Pugh, there’s more than enough acting mastery for you to enjoy on screen. Don’t miss it.

So, now you know which British blockbusters to watch next on Amazon Prime Video, don’t forget that you can catch them all to watch again, anytime, anywhere, with Replay Media Catcher for PC and Mac. What Are We Looking Forward To?

A Knight’s Tale (2001)

If the Heath Ledger nostalgia has hit you, and you’re in the mood for a good chick flick, you’ll want to catch A Knight’s Tale. It’s the story of peasant-born William Thatcher (Heath Ledger) who wants to change his fate, believing that he is destined for greatness. He enlists in a jousting tournament, masquerading as a nobleman so that he can participate, and begins his quest to glory. In the process, he wins the heart of a fair maiden and challenges societal and class norms.

Jurassic Park (1993)

It’s a Spielberg science fiction classic that millions across the globe came to love. The first installment in the Jurassic Park franchise by Michael Crichton is set on the fictional island of Isla Nublar, near Costa Rica. The story follows businessman John Hammond and a team of genetic scientists who have created a wildlife park of de-extinct dinosaurs. Industrial sabotage eventually leads to a catastrophic shutdown of the park’s power facilities and Hammond’s children struggle to survive on the island, now controlled by the very species meant to be controlled.

Immigration Nation (Season 1)

Immigration Nation is a highly-anticipated, six-part series that gives us a rare inside look at the machinery of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The series covers the spring of 2017 to the winter of 2019, following changes to immigration policies implemented by the Trump Administration. Directed by Shaul Schwarz and Christina Clusiau, the series explores both sides of the debate over immigration in the U.S.

Les Misérables (2012)

There’s nothing like a good musical that pulls at the heartstrings. Based on Victor Hugo’s book, the Les Misérables story is set in the early 19th century and begins with Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), who after 19 years as a prisoner, is freed by Javert (Russell Crowe), the officer in charge of the prison workforce. After breaking parole to start a new life for himself, Javert vows to bring Valjean back to prison. Eight years later, Valjean meets Cosette and becomes her guardian after the death of Cosette’s mother. However, with Javert’s relentless pursuit, peace and quiet is far from reach.

Rising Phoenix (2020)

Featuring Paralympians from around the world, Rising Phoenix is a ground-breaking movie about the paralympic movement, and will premiere on Netflix all over the globe on August 26. The film release was planned to coincide with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, but it will now form an important part of the celebrations leading up to the Games in 2021. The film tells the fascinating story of the Paralympic Games beginning after the devastation of World War II, to the modern day Games as we know them, the third largest sporting event in the world. The Paralympic Games sparked a global movement that challenges each one of us to change the way we think about disability, diversity and human potential.
