What Are We Looking Forward To?

GoodFellas (1990)

A mob crime classic directed by Martin Scorsese in the early 1990’s, GoodFellas is an adaptation of the 1985 non-fiction book “Wiseguy” by Nicholas Pileggi, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Scorsese. The movie depicts the rise and fall of mob associate Henry Hill and his friends and family from 1955 to 1980. Don’t miss Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta in what is widely regarded as one of the greatest films in the gangster genre.

Elite (Season 3)

Elite is a racy Spanish  teen show that has captured audiences from all over the globe. The series follows three underprivileged pupils who join Las Encinas, a private school attended by the children of the privileged and wealthy, when a murder takes place. The mystery of who killed Marina (María Pedraza) begins to unfold, as well as the events leading up to her death.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

Silver Linings Playbook is a romantic comedy-drama film, adapted from Matthew Quick’s 2008 novel “The Silver Linings Playbook”. Former teacher Pat Solitano (Bradley Cooper) moves back in with his parents after losing his job, and being released from a mental institution. Wanting to rebuild his life and reconcile with his ex-wife, things get a little complicated when Pat meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence). She offers to help him reconnect with his wife, but only if he will do something very important for her in exchange. 

Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C. J. Walker (Season 1)

“Self Made” stars Academy Award Winner, Octavia Spencer, in the untold, true story of black hair care pioneer and entrepreneur Madam C. J. Walker. The series highlights how she overcame post-slavery racial and gender biases, rivalries and personal betrayals, tumultuous marriages and family issues to eventually become America’s first black, self-made female millionaire. The movie was inspired by “On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam CJ Walker”, written by A’Lelia Bundles, Walker’s great-great-granddaughter.

Unorthodox (Season 1)

“Unorthodox” is the story of a young ultra-Orthodox Jewish woman who leaves her arranged marriage and religious community in New York to start a new life abroad in Berlin. However, just as she begins to find her own way, on the road to a new life, the past begins to catch up with her. The series was inspired by Deborah Feldman’s New York Times Bestselling book, and it stars Shira Haas, Jeff Wilbusch, and Amit Rahav.

The 92nd Academy Awards have come and gone, and with them, brought an offering of some incredible movies from 2019. 

From epic speeches, to history-making wins, it was a cinematic year not to be missed. And while there was a host of excellent nominees for “Best Picture”, as always, only one could take home the golden statue.

Jojo, the titular character, is faced with an internal conflict as he tries to find his place as a cadet in the Hitler Youth organization, after learning that his mother is harboring a young Jewish girl in their attic. What makes this satirical coming-of-age comedy unique is Jojo’s imaginary friend who bears witness to Jojo’s life lessons through it all — Adolf Hitler himself.

Joker

In one of the most brilliant and disturbing films of the last year, Todd Phillips’ Joker is a study of the motivations that ultimately lead the titular character, Arthur Fleck, into villainy. Bleek and spellbinding, the movie takes a voyage into the well-known Batman story and flips it inside out. Joaquin Phoenix’s performance earns him a well-deserved Oscar in this never-before-told origin story of Joker that is not for the faint of heart. 

1917

Catch “1917” in theaters!

In a wartime epic that cleaned up at the Golden Globes, Sam Mendes’ 1917 is a tale of bravery and sacrifice that is rumored to have been inspired by war tales of the director’s own grandfather. Not just simply another depiction of World War I, the film follows two British soldiers who receive time-sensitive and seemingly impossible orders. They must cross into enemy territory in order to deliver a message that could potentially save the countless lives of their fellow comrades, including the brother of one of the soldiers. If not for the story, 1917 is worth watching for the cinematography alone, as it was shot unconventionally with a series of continuous, uncut shots that were then uniquely connected to give the feeling of one long take.

Ford v Ferrari

Ford v Ferrari is the incredible true-life story between two friends, American automotive designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and former British race car driver, Ken Miles (Christian Bale), who take on Ford’s rival Enzo Ferrari with their revolutionary vehicle in the race of their lives at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France in 1966. The film is a perfect mix of sport, humor and drama for racing enthusiasts and not only. 

The Irishman

In Martin Scorsese’s turn at producing and directing a Netflix original, we get a crime drama to end all crime dramas. Starring Robert DeNiro (Frank Sheeran), Joe Pesci (Russell Bufalino) and Al Pacino (Jimmy Hoffa), the movie is an epic story of organized crime in post-war America as told through the eyes of Sheeran, a World War II veteran. The Irishman chronicles the disappearance of legendary union boss Jimmy Hoffa, while offering an enlightening journey through the hidden world of organized crime.

Parasite

Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite was a mover and shaker at this year’s Academy Awards; the film took home the most awards, including Best Picture, making it the first time ever that a foreign language film has won the category. Offering dark humor, drama and countless edge-of-your-seat moments, the film is a depiction of greed and class discrimination, and how this unfortunate societal reality threatens the newly formed relationship between the privileged Park family and that of the poor Kims.

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Quentin Tarantino’s controversial ninth film stars, most notably, Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role of Hollywood actor Rick Dalton, Brad Pitt as Cliff Booth, Dalton’s best friend and stuntman, and Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate. The film follows Dalton and Booth as they struggle to stay relevant and active in the Hollywood scene and as a surprise, touches on the unfortunate story of the Charles Manson cult and the murder of Sharon Tate. For those who have missed a good story with the classic gory twist of Tarantino, topped off with a star-studded cast: this one’s for you. 

Little Women

The movie Little Women is based on the beautiful tale of four sisters in the post-Civil War era in the United States, penned by Louisa May Alcott. The March sisters include Jo, Amy, Meg and Beth. If you already own an Apple TV device, then the crossover is easy, and it’s simple to subscribe to the brand new service, and get streaming.  Ringing in at about $5 a month, it’s a pretty affordable contender to replace or accompany all your classic streaming favorites. 

The streaming service offers a free trial period of 7 days, as well as a free music streaming program for students. It’s a pretty great incentive to sign up, even if just to add to your growing army of streaming options. We’ve got great news for Disney fans, or just for all the movie-lovers out there…

All your favorite Disney movies can now be found in a brand new home, Disney+ (pronounced “Disney Plus”). It’s time to say a brief “goodbye” to old classics like “The Lion King”, and new crowd pleasers like “Coco”, who’ll be leaving the other popular streaming sites to live in one handy place… Disney+. Now you can enjoy a full roster of all your favorite high-quality family favorites from the convenience of one central location.

This brand-spanking-new streaming service has just debuted this week, launching officially in the US, Canada and the Netherlands on November 12th. (If you are in Australia or New Zealand, stay tuned for November 19th, as it’s set to release there on that date…)

And while this highly anticipated streaming service has been long-awaited, it definitely holds its fair share of mystery. Luckily, we are here to help you get the latest on your favorite family-friendly movies and shows, so you can browse and capture till your heart’s content. 

The Fundamentals

Disney+ is a subscription streaming service, so it’s a paid service, but at $6.99 a month (or $69.99 per year) it’s priced competitively with the services you are already subscribing to. The caveat is that it is primed to be the exclusive source to find all of the titles that are proprietary, so you won’t be able to get them on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video anymore. To see them, you’ll need to get a subscription to Disney+. 

However, just like all of the streaming services you know and love, Disney+ will be available to watch online, on RokuTV or streaming devices, or AppleTV and more.

What’s On?

Disney+ will act and function a lot like your favorite streaming services, but it will exclusively feature content from Disney and its partners. Expect to see titles from:

After having two critically acclaimed seasons about the British monarchy with Claire Foy and Matt Smith at the helm, the third season is unique in that the entire royal family is recast as viewers are introduced to the next era of Her Royal Highness’s England.

The Good Place, (Season 4)

In the final season of this wildly popular fan favorite, viewers will follow the original gang as they try their last chance to get into The Good Place. Will they make it?

The Irishman (2019)

In Martin Scorsese’s turn at producing and directing a Netflix original, we get a crime drama to end all crime dramas. This scorcher stars Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino, playing Frank Sheehan, Marty Bufalino and Jimmy Hoffa, respectively. If you love mafia movies, you won’t want to miss this one, with the masters of mob cinema at the helm. CGI graphics make it possible to see all of these actors play younger versions of themselves onscreen. Pretty incredible.

Euphoria/Euforia (2019)

This original new drama centers around two brothers who have been living very different lives. When an unfortunate life circumstance hits them both, they are reunited once again. In this drama, both will be forced to discover the mysterious link that further draws them together.

Queer Eye: We’re In Japan! (Season 5)

In this special fifth season, the Fab Five take their talents to Tokyo to help four special participants desperately in need of a makeover. As they help their new friends tackle the areas in their lives that need extra special TLC, the team meet their biggest challenge yet as they navigate a new language, a new culture and new ways to make over a life in-style. Kawai!

Hache (Season 1)

In this Spanish thriller set in 1960’s Barcelona, prostitute Helena finds herself involved in the burgeoning heroine scene as she attempts to make a better life for herself and her family. At turns stylish and sexy, this one is not to be missed!

Bosch

In this carefully crafted detective drama series, we are introduced to Detective Harry Bosch (played  to perfection by “Deadwood”’s Titus Welliver). Phillip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams

Continuing its love affair with the eponymous sci-fi writer Phillip K. Dick, this original Amazon Prime Video offering is a sci-fi ride that is set to rival “Black Mirror”. While each standalone episode in this mind-bending series is still eerie,“Electric Dreams” is infinitely less bleak and is, dare we say hopeful even, about the future of mankind. Cool Hand Luke (1967)

This movie introduces us to Luke, an ex-soldier who is sentenced to two years in a Florida prison. What makes this psychological prison drama a classic is Luke’s refusal to submit to an arbitrary system of power and punishment, and it asks the viewer to do the same.

Dumb and Dumber (1994)

Netflix is offering two Austin Powers flicks: The International Man of Mystery, and its sequel, The Spy Who Shagged Me. Pretty Little Liars, Seasons 1-7 (2010-2017)

The only series on our list, Pretty Little Liars is the hit that launched quite a few careers. Set in a suburban Pennsylvania town, this hit show is based on the mystery surrounding the unraveling secrets of a group of friends. Once inseparable, the friends find themselves torn apart after the disappearance of the leader of their friend group. They are brought together again after they start receiving mysterious letters from “A” who seems to be out for revenge. This is a great one to record and save for binge-watching. Just make sure you can save it to your personal watchlist before it leaves Netflix for good!
